Missionary Training Program

So you want to be a music missionary? Maybe you feel like you would do a great job and you know everything you need to know to go into the field. Maybe you are terrified at the thought of going to a foreign country and having to teach and act in a leadership position. Fear not! IYMC’s intensive missionary training program will get you prepped and ready to be fishers of men in no time. There is something for everyone to learn in this program.

IYMC uses a mixture of its own courses as well as the Adventist Frontier Missions (AFM) training program to provide a well rounded training experience. We realize that we require a lot of training. We do this because it will not only provide you with important knowledge, it will also assist you in providing top quality service to the people you interact with while you are in the field.

All courses are required to be completed in order to be sent into the field. Many courses are online-based and others are taught in person at AFM’s training center. Missionaries are expected to treat this as a full time summer school program. Continue reading to see the requirements.

IYMC Training

Pedagogy Training

All missionaries must take an instrument pedagogy course such as ABRSM or Suzuki Teacher Training.

Music History

Learn about music history from the Biblical Period to the present day.

Beginning Conducting

This course teaches the basics of conducting. This is a very useful skill to have in the field.

Spiritual Perspectives on Music

This course explores the ways that music and spiritual things intersect. It gives a broad overview of the philosophy of church music and addresses controversial topics.

Language

Students will be placed with a private tutor who will help them learn the basics of the primary language of their site.

Classroom Management Skills

This course will cover the basics of classroom management. There is a special emphasis on how to deal with the intercultural teaching.

AFM Training

IYMC missionaries are required to attend in-person training at AFM’s training site in Berrien Springs, Michigan. You can learn more about the program by visiting their webpage.
